Statement on Maui County chartered plane crash on Lanai

The following statement was issued by Councilmember Michael Victorino shortly after a press conference held at the Office of the Mayor:

I would like to extend my most heartfelt sympathies to the families of the two Planning Department staff who passed away in the recent plane crash on Lanai. Mahalo to their families who supported these fine employees as they served our community.

I also want to acknowledge the heroic acts of the Deputy Corporation Counsel, who reportedly saved the lives of two other County staffers.

I wish the injured a speedy recovery and may God bless all of the families and loved ones of those involved during this difficult time.

Feb. 27, 2014

WAILUKU, Maui, Hawai`i – Three people were killed and three injured after a Maui County chartered plane crashed just outside of Lanai Airport Wednesday evening.

The deceased were identified as the pilot of the plane and two Department of Planning employees. Two other planning employees were in critical condition and a deputy attorney for Corporation Counsel was in serious condition. All three survivors were airlifted to the Queens Medical Center after the crash.

The group had been on Lanai earlier that evening to staff a Lanai Planning Commission Meeting which was scheduled to run from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Maui County chartered a return flight on Maui Air which left at around 9:05 p.m.
