Community plan and hurricane preparedness among topics for Wednesday’s Kahului Summer Townhall

KAHULUI, Hawaiʻi (Aug. 6, 2026)—The Kahului Summer Townhall will provide residents an evening of education, conversation and new connections starting at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Kahului Elementary School, Councilmember Kauanoe Batangan announced today.

Batangan said the townhall will include a presentation from the Department of Planning on the Central Maui Community Plan, which is being updated with public input to guide development and preservation of Central Maui over a 20-year period. A representative from the Maui Emergency Management Agency is also scheduled to speak on hurricane preparedness, he said.

“We are creating a space where residents can learn about county and community activities, ask questions and share their ideas,” said Batangan, who holds the seat for the Kahului residency area. “I encourage anyone looking to be part of the discussion on shaping Central Maui’s future to attend this townhall.”

The Central Maui Community Plan will be a comprehensive update of 2002’s Wailuku-Kahului Community Plan. The community plan area covers six subareas:

  • Kahakuloa
  • Waiheʻe
  • Waiehu
  • Wailuku
  • Kahului
  • Waikapū

According to the department, the project is in its second phase. The sixth and final phase will be Maui County Council approval by ordinance.

Batangan said Wednesday’s townhall is part of a continuing series of events to connect Kahului residents with their neighbors and their government and will include a Q&A session.
