Proposed regulations for bicycle tours operating in the Pāʻia-Haʻikū, and Makawao-Pukalani-Kula community plan areas
MAKAWAO, Hawaiʻi—Legislation to update regulations for bicycle tours operating in the Pāʻia-Haʻikū and Makawao-Pukalani-Kula community plan areas will be reviewed in the Government Relations, Ethics and Transparency Committee meeting on Tuesday at 9 a.m., Committee Chair Michael J. Molina announced today.
Residents of those areas of Maui have expressed concern about roadway crowding from a proliferation of bicycle tours, Molina said. He said proposed changes to the Maui County Code in a bill he introduced include:
- prohibiting unguided tours,
- limiting guided tours to no more than six each day in each community plan area,
- requiring guides at the front and back of tours,
- limiting each tour company to one guided tour per two hours and
- having riders sign the “bike pono” pledge.
“I encourage community members to join me in an effort to strengthen bicycle-tour regulations and urge the mayor to address public safety, especially in areas with high traffic and dangerous terrain,” Molina said. “I strongly encourage all residents, especially Upcountry community members, to share their knowledge and input via oral or written testimony for Tuesday’s meeting.”
