Public hearing scheduled Thursday for Hoʻonani Village affordable-housing project
WAILUKU, Hawaiʻi (Aug. 31, 2026)—A public hearing on bills to update the Maui Island Plan and Wailuku-Kahului Community Plan for Central Maui’s Hoʻonani Village Mixed Use Development is scheduled for Thursday at 4:30 p.m. online and in the Council Chamber, Councilmember Tamara Paltin announced today.
Disaster Recovery, International Affairs and Planning Committee Report 26-34 recommended passage of Bill 163 (2026) and Bill 164 (2026) on first reading. A public hearing is required before second and final reading, said Paltin, who chairs the committee.
“I encourage residents to participate in the public hearing so the council can hear from the community as it considers this significant change,” said Paltin, who chairs the committee. “Our goal is dignified, affordable housing, and the community’s input is a critical step in our decision-making process.”
The affordable-housing project would be built at Hansen and Pūlehu roads and include a variety of supportive commercial, recreational and light-industrial uses. As proposed, Hoʻonani Village would include 1,608 multifamily housing units, including 800 affordable units.
Paltin said the public hearing’s sole purpose is to accept testimony, either in person, online or in writing. No votes will be taken on Thursday, she said.
