Updates on roads and other Maui County issues at next South Maui Townhall on Sept. 30
KĪHEI, Hawaiʻi (Sept. 16, 2026)—A discussion on storm recovery, roadway improvements and other County of Maui issues will take place at the next South Maui Townhall scheduled for Sept. 30 at 6 p.m. at the Malcolm Center, Councilmember Tom Cook announced today.
Recovery efforts following Hurricane Lowell and the Kona Low storms in March, flood mitigation and updates on the North-South Collector Road and the use of R-1 recycled wastewater are some of the specific topics that will be covered, Cook said.
“We know people are busy with day-to-day responsibilities, but these townhalls are ideal for anyone wanting face-to-face interaction with local government,” said Cook, who holds the council seat for the South Maui residency area, where he hosts quarterly townhalls. “I’m grateful to see people engaged by what’s happening in their community.”
South Maui is also taking center stage as the Disaster Recovery, International Affairs and Planning Committee has begun work this week on Bill 108 (2026) to adopt the South Maui Community Plan, Cook said. The 20-year growth and land-use framework for the Kīhei-Makena region includes goals, policies and actions to address community challenges and is now under consideration for the first comprehensive update since 1998.
