Council gives final approval to FY 2027 budget focused on housing, social services and disaster recovery

WAILUKU, Hawaiʻi (June 6, 2026)—The Maui County Council passed a trimmed fiscal year 2027 budget on second and final reading yesterday with support for affordable housing, social services and disaster mitigation and recovery, Chair Alice L. Lee announced yesterday.

The council unanimously passed the $1.6 billion budget, which includes

$1.2 billion in operating costs and $351 million in capital improvement projects. The council’s actions on Bill 55 (2026), Bill 56 (2026) and other budget-related bills led to an $8.4 million decrease from the proposed budget sent to the council in March.

“I would like to thank all those who contributed to the finalization of the budget as this is a complicated process,” said Lee, who holds the seat for the Wailuku-Waikapū-Waiheʻe residency area. “We aimed to streamline this budget in a fiscally responsible manner to continue our support of the communities in Maui County.”

Budget, Finance and Economici Development Committee Report 26-25, issued at first reading on May 15, highlights key funding:

Affordable housing

  • $9 million to Hoʻonani Village Mixed-Use Development Project
  • $6.5 million to Habitat for Humanity Maui, Inc.

Social services

  • $2 million to Research Corporation of the University of Hawaiʻi
  • $1.2 million to Partners in Development Foundation

Disaster mitigation and recovery

  • $6 million to Lahaina Community Land Trust
  • $3 million to Upcountry wildfire rebuild, recovery and mitigation

The council-adopted budget now goes to Mayor Richard T. Bissen, Jr.’s desk and would take effect July 1.
