Committee to discuss rent stabilization on Monday evening

WAILUKU, Hawaiʻi (Sept. 12, 2024)—The Housing and Land Use Committee will have a special meeting on Monday at 5:30 p.m. in the Council Chamber to discuss the possible effects of rent stabilization in Maui, Committee Chair Tasha Kama announced today.

Kama said a planned Sept. 5 committee meeting was canceled because of technical issues with distribution of the meeting agenda. On Monday, the committee is expected to receive presentations from representatives of the Maui Tenants and Workers Association and Realtors Association of Maui, she said.

“The council has heard community concerns about rising rental costs, which are reaching historic levels,” said Kama, who holds the council seat for the Kahului residency area and is the council’s presiding officer pro tempore. “I look forward to Monday’s meeting and gaining further insight on the foreseeable impacts of rent stabilization from our presenters.”

No legislation on rent stabilization is pending before the committee. But Monday’s discussion is intended to raise awareness and foster discussion, she said.

Information regarding upcoming council and committee meetings, including instructions on how to provide testimony, can be found at mauicounty.us/agendas.
